Adopt-A-Plot is free, simple, and built around one promise: that a veteran resting in a community cemetery will not be forgotten.
Most veterans rest in local cemeteries, not national ones.
Approximately 75% of veterans nationwide are buried in local community cemeteries rather than federally funded national or state veterans cemeteries.
Many of these community cemeteries are located only a short drive from the neighborhoods where we live, work, and raise our families. Yet countless veteran graves receive few visitors and little public recognition.
To help bring families and communities back to these sacred grounds, WRRF created the Adopt-A-Plot Project.

A modest commitment with a lasting impact.
Adopt-A-Plot is designed so individuals, families, students, businesses, and civic groups can participate without cost or complicated requirements.
Choose a Veteran
Select a veteran grave in a participating community cemetery or allow WRRF to help match you with one.
Make One Visit
Commit to visiting the grave at least once each year on a date meaningful to you, the veteran, or your family.
Honor the Legacy
Pause, reflect, say the veteran’s name, place a flower or flag if permitted, and remember the service represented there.
Carry It Forward
Share the veteran’s story and invite someone else to adopt a plot in their own community.
You may visit more often, but you are never required to. The purpose is not maintenance or obligation. The purpose is remembrance.

Read the marker, say the veteran’s name, and take a moment to recognize the life and service represented there.
Connect Generations
Bring children, grandchildren, classmates, or friends and use the visit as an opportunity to teach remembrance.

Your presence shows that community cemeteries and the veterans buried within them still matter.

Adopt-A-Plot is a remembrance project. Participants should follow cemetery rules and avoid any work that could damage a grave marker or burial site.
Good ways to honor the veteran
- Read the veteran’s name and service information aloud.
- Pause for reflection, prayer, or a moment of silence.
- Place an approved flower, flag, or remembrance token.
- Bring family members or youth volunteers to learn the veteran’s story.
- Take a respectful photograph and share why the visit mattered.
What not to do
- Do not clean or repair a marker unless trained and authorized.
- Do not use household chemicals, bleach, wire brushes, or pressure washers.
- Do not move cemetery objects or disturb surrounding graves.
- Do not leave items prohibited by cemetery rules.
- Do not post private family information without permission.
Every visit keeps a legacy present.
