Old Bracken Cemetery

Bracken, Texas

Old Bracken Cemetery, located in southern Comal County, Texas, is a historic burial ground tied to the early settlement of the Bracken community. The land in this area was acquired in 1849 by William Bracken, after which the settlement was briefly called Davenport before officially taking the Bracken name. The cemetery likely served early settlers of the area and is closely connected to the local Methodist church and surrounding community.

The earliest known burial in Old Bracken Cemetery is Otto Bergemann Jr., in 1899, though additional unmarked graves may date earlier. The cemetery reflects the deep roots of families who settled in the region in the mid‑ to late‑1800s and may include veterans and community members whose histories are still being researched.

While Old Bracken Cemetery is smaller and less formally documented than some other local cemeteries, it remains an important part of Comal County’s heritage. Preservation efforts help honor the lives of those buried here and provide a space for descendants, community members, and researchers to connect with the area’s rich history.
