Niederwald Cemetery was established in the early twentieth century in the historic German-Texan community of Niederwald, located along the historic Austin–San Antonio Road near the Caldwell and Hays County line. The community was founded by German pioneers following the Civil War and was named for the brushwood and mesquite-covered landscape that characterized the area. Over time, Niederwald developed into a thriving rural farming community supported by churches, schools, local businesses, and agricultural enterprises that served generations of Texas families.

Covering approximately one acre, Niederwald Cemetery serves as the final resting place for many of the community's earliest settlers and their descendants. The earliest known marked burial is that of Ernst Schaarschmidt in 1905, placing the cemetery's origins at the beginning of the twentieth century as the community continued to grow and prosper. The cemetery remains a tangible link to the area's German heritage and the families who helped shape the cultural and agricultural history of northern Caldwell County.

The monuments and memorials found throughout the cemetery reflect more than a century of local history, preserving the stories of farmers, ranchers, merchants, church members, and community leaders whose lives contributed to the development of Niederwald and the surrounding region. Today, the cemetery stands as an important historical resource and a lasting reminder of the perseverance, faith, and community spirit of Texas' early German settlers.

Today, WRRF research has identified 10 veterans currently buried at Niederwald Cemetery, spanning military service from WWII through the Vietnam War. Niederwald Cemetery remains a vital link between local history and the service and sacrifice of the veterans interred within its grounds.
