Mountain Valley Cemetery was established in 1905 in the historic Sattler community of eastern Comal County, an area shaped by early German-Texan settlement and rural Hill Country life. The cemetery grew out of the burial of Friedrich Pantermuehl in 1904, after which local families formally organized the site as a community burial ground to serve the surrounding farming and ranching families of the Mountain Valley area.

Organized and maintained by local residents, the cemetery functioned as a true community institution, with members contributing labor, materials, and care to ensure dignified burials and long-term preservation. Early records reflect a strong sense of collective responsibility, with families working together to fence, maintain, and protect the grounds as the settlement developed through the early 20th century.

Over generations, Mountain Valley Cemetery has become the final resting place for many of the region’s founding families and their descendants, reflecting the cultural, linguistic, and historical roots of the Sattler area. Its gravestones document the transition of the community through periods of settlement, growth, and change, offering a tangible record of local heritage and continuity.

Today, WRRF research has identified 57 veterans currently buried at Mountain Valley Cemetery, spanning service from World War I through the Cold War era. This number is considered preliminary and is expected to increase as ongoing research and record reconciliation efforts continue. Through preservation, documentation, and restoration, the cemetery remains a vital link between local history and the service of those who answered the call to defend it.
