BIOGRAPHY
Alvin Willie Gass was a proud Texan, devoted family man, and patriotic American whose life reflected a deep commitment to faith, community, and country. Born on February 6, 1896, in Spring Branch, Texas, Alvin was a lifelong resident of Comal County, rooted in the land and values that shaped generations of Texans. He was the son of Alfred C. Gass and grew up in a time when hard work, integrity, and service were central to everyday life.
As a young man, Alvin answered his nation’s call during one of the most consequential moments in world history. He served honorably as a veteran of World War I, standing among the generation that helped preserve freedom and uphold democratic ideals during a global conflict. His military service reflected a quiet but unwavering patriotism, one that continued throughout his life through his involvement with American Legion Post 179 and World War I Barracks 1522, organizations dedicated to fellowship, remembrance, and the care of fellow veterans. His service to the United States remains a lasting testament to his courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty.
Following the war, Alvin returned home and dedicated his life to building and sustaining his community. On October 11, 1922, he married Viola Voges, and together they shared a life grounded in family, faith, and mutual devotion. Alvin worked as a farmer and rancher, stewarding the land with the same sense of responsibility and pride that defined his military service. His work helped sustain his family and contributed to the rural heritage of the Spring Branch area.
Alvin was deeply involved in civic and social organizations, reflecting his strong belief in community bonds and shared responsibility. He held a charter-life membership in the Bulverde–Spring Branch Bowling Club and belonged to numerous local and cultural organizations, including Hermann Sons, the Anhalt Germania Farmers Verein, the Vogel Valley Shooting Club, the Guadalupe Valley Shooting Club, and the Spring Branch Maennerchor. Through these groups, he fostered fellowship, tradition, and service to others.
A man of faith, Alvin was a devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bulverde, where his spiritual life guided his actions and relationships. His faith, patriotism, and sense of duty were evident in all aspects of his life.
Alvin Willie Gass passed away on January 24 at the age of 87 in San Antonio, Texas. He was laid to rest at the Gass Cemetery in Spring Branch, the land he loved and called home his entire life.
Alvin Willie Gass’s life stands as a lasting example of service before self—both in uniform and at home. His legacy endures in the freedoms he helped defend, the family he cherished, and the community he faithfully served.
